MSB EXPERIENCES AT OUR "CLINIC" - MEMORIES
OF MY 14 DAY QUARANTINE AT THE ABBEY SCHOOL
GEORGE MICKIEWICZ <amickiew@att.net>
Mon, May 23
Dearest Brothers,
With all the pandemic and
quarantine stuff going on around our world in the past few years, a related
memory popped up yesterday in my mind.
Circa 1959, I came down
with chicken pox at our school and had to spend 2 weeks isolated/quarantined in
our little clinic.
Nobody else contracted it
at that time.
It was a lonely and boring
experience being down there all by myself.
The only person that I saw
was our kind nurse whose name I no longer remember.
Nights were a bit scary
when an external noise in the bush would wake me up wondering: “Who/What is
that?”.
During our Mount days, I
suspect that everyone of us had to visit our nurse due to this or that.
I invite you to share your
related experience(s) with us and Ladislao can use it/them in a future
Circular. Thanks.
I was recently diagnosed
with Covid.
Thank God, my symptoms were
very light and I fully recovered after one week.
Hope and pray that you and
yours are doing well.

During my extended stay at MSB, no do not recall
whatsoever as to any clinic or nurse. Did open my right knee once in a fall
during a football game and Enrique Gomez assisted me as I was taken on the way
to the doctor in Tunapuna who stitched it up and when I was brought back again.

I do remember the Clinic and of course, small
quarters
If I recall correctly my brother Fulvio did also
some time there due to an infectious disease but I cannot recall what was his
sickness.

My experience at the
clinic: by Ladislao Kertesz, EDITOR
On an average once a
year I was sent to the clinic.
In all
cases it was for minor reasons, flu epidemic.
Of course, fever etc.
During
pandemic periods that also happened about once every trimester, we were
confined in our bed at the dormitories.
The
clinic had a small room at the entrance and bathroom.
In the
main room there were six beds.
Hospital
beds, as these had a taller legs to facilitate the work of the doctors and
nurses.
Nurses?
Well there was one in service but sometimes there was a need of two when there
was a pandemic.
The
doctor used to visit the school when needed and was the same one that looked
over the patients at the monastery.
The
view was very good towards the north and east, as the clinic was in the NE
corner of the small boys building, it was below the dormitory.
There
have been stories about the biscuit container that was over the cabinet at the
entrance.
It seems
that a couple of boys, hungry boys decided to raid the “cookie jar”, the result
was pathetic and were caught soon after the event.
Usually
this meant expulsion but the boys were pardoned at the last moment because
there were no airplane tickets available.

PHOTO
There are 8 boys in
this photograph.
All
are wearing white vests, with printed numbers, and they’re located at the MSB
Sports Field.
I
think they must have been students at MSB in the 1970’s, and probably were
members of an athletic team.
I
believe this was the school's first marathon between the various inter-houses,
prior to the school Athletics sports in one of those years.
Thanks
to Adrian Chandler, who called from St. Ann’s, Trinidad, and to Ian Gomes, Glen
McKoy, Neil Charles, Conrad Boney, Gabriel Faria and Salvador Coscarart, all of
whom contributed to identifying the boys.
(Salvador
thinks the picture was taken between 1972 and 1973; Conrad thinks the picture
was taken between 1973–74.)
[I have
included the dates they would have graduated of all the boys, need your help in
making possible corrections, EDITOR]

George Mickiewicz <amickiew@att.net>
Sat, Apr 30
Hi Don
Thanks for your efforts to
get our school history and related records archived in the T&T National
Archives.
You are one of only a dozen
or so alumni who have actively supported many school-related activities over
the past decades.
I am very proud and
appreciate very much your love, dedication, energy, time, and $$ that you have
devoted to these valued contributions.
Cheers,
George
